Delhi court sentences woman to life for smothering 2 minor daughters to death

A 32-year-old woman was given a life sentence by a Delhi court on Wednesday for killing her two young kids by suffocation in February 2018. The judge described the crime as a "cold-blooded murder" and the "rarest of rare" cases when announcing the verdict.

The prosecution claims that on February 20, 2018, Leelawati, the mother, smothered her two daughters, who were five years and five months old, respectively, in a violent manner. Two more children, a son (2) and a girl (7), survive the convict.

Extra Meetings The woman's conduct of killing her own daughters, according to Judge Sachin Jain of the Tis Hazari court, shocked the conscience of both the court and society at large. "Further, the act of smothering both the daughters by the convict is a clear-cut cold-blooded murder, bringing the present case into the category of rare of the rarest case", the court noted.

Because of their caring role and apparent sacrifice, mothers are always viewed as saviors, according to the court decision. "Therefore, the judge concluded that society wants to glorify motherhood and expects women to be selfless, nurturing, and emotionally strong."

The woman was spared the death penalty by the court because her two surviving children could suffer if their mothers were taken away from them. A life sentence, according to the judge, was more "appropriate" because it would allow for her rehabilitation and reintegration into society. In addition to the life sentence, she also received a fine of ₹10,000.
