Kolkata Rains Live: City Submerged Ahead of Durga Puja, IMD Warns of More Showers
As Kolkata gears up for the Durga Puja festivities, heavy overnight rainfall lasting nearly seven hours has left the city severely waterlogged, throwing daily life out of gear. Both north and south Kolkata reported flooding, with North Kolkata receiving around 200 mm of rain and South Kolkata nearly 180 mm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a mix of yellow and orange alerts across West Bengal. While South 24 Parganas faces an orange alert for heavy rainfall, districts including Kolkata, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Malda are under a yellow alert.
The intense downpour caused traffic snarls, waterlogged homes, and disruptions to public transport, bringing life in the city and adjoining areas to a near standstill. With Durga Puja preparations in full swing, the rain has also hit idol-making in Howrah, where artisans are struggling to finish clay idols on time.
A Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official confirmed that emergency drainage pumps have been deployed across the city to tackle the rising water levels. Despite efforts, many areas remain submerged, sparking concerns of further disruptions if showers continue.
The IMD has predicted more rain in the coming days, advising residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. For Kolkatans, the heavy rain has not only dampened festive spirit but also raised fresh worries about whether the city will recover in time for Durga Puja celebrations.
