China Steps Up Warning to EU

China has increased its warnings to the European Union, accusing the bloc of attempting to suppress Chinese companies. This comes as the EU nears a decision on imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, speaking at a meeting in Spain, emphasised Beijing's preference for resolving economic and trade disputes through dialogue to prevent escalation. He noted that leaders from France, Germany, and the EU have expressed a desire to avoid a trade war.

“If the EU does not practice what it preaches and continues to suppress Chinese companies, China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese companies," according to the statement.

The EU has initiated multiple trade investigations against China, citing issues of anti-dumping and unfair subsidies, particularly in the clean-technology sector. The EU must notify Chinese electric vehicle (EV) exporters of any impending tariffs and their amounts by early June, with potential implementation a month later.

In response, China has started an anti-dumping investigation into European brandy, specifically targeting French cognacs. State media have hinted at possible retaliatory measures against European cars and pork. Wang Wentao criticised the EU for using claims of overcapacity, unfair competition, and other "false narratives" to justify investigations into Chinese EVs, railways, solar products, medical equipment, and other industries, which heightens the risk of China-EU tensions.

Wang urged the EU to move away from protectionism and focus on dialogue and cooperation, according to a statement following his visit to a proposed Chinese car factory in Spain on Sunday.
