AMD Introduces New AI Chipsets to Compete with Nvidia and Qualcomm

AMD is challenging Nvidia's AI semiconductor dominance with new AI chips launched at Computex 2024. CEO Lisa Su revealed the MI325X accelerator, available in Q4 2024, and the Ryzen AI 300 chipset range for Microsoft's AI PCs. These chipsets will compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series and Intel's Meteor Lake series. Su emphasised AMD's AI focus, noting its transformative impact on industries and computing.

AMD's announcement follows Nvidia's introduction of new chipsets, including the 'Rubin' line to replace the earlier 'Blackwell' model, led by Jensen Huang.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, while talking about the new chipsets from AMD, said, “We are in the midst of a massive AI platform shift, with the promise to transform how we live and work… That's why our deep partnership with AMD, which has spanned multiple computing platforms, from the PC to custom silicon for Xbox, and now to AI, is so important to us."

The recently launched Ryzen AI 300 series will be released in July, initially available in select Copilot Plus PCs like the Asus Vivobook S15 and HP OmniBook. Microsoft aims to reignite competition with Apple in the laptop market through these new Copilot+ PCs. Apple's MacBooks previously relied on Intel chipsets, but the shift to ARM-based M-series silicon has given Apple a significant advantage. Microsoft aims to surpass Apple's laptops' performance and usability by prioritising generative AI and introducing advanced processors like AMD's Ryzen AI 300 series and Snapdragon X series.
