Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in Maharashtra ended on a somber note this year. As lakhs of devotees bid farewell to their beloved Bappa during visarjan processions on Sunday, several tragic incidents of drowning and electrocution were reported across the state.
According to officials, at least nine people lost their lives and 12 remain missing during immersion rituals in districts including Thane, Pune, Nanded, Nashik, Jalgaon, Washim, Palghar, and Amravati.

Pune: Five people were swept away in separate incidents in rivers and wells. Three bodies have been recovered so far.

Nanded: Three persons were swept away during immersion, one rescued, while two remain missing.

Nashik: Five people were carried away by strong currents; two bodies have been retrieved, rescue ops continue for others.

Thane (Shahapur): Three men drowned in the Bhargavi river after idol immersion; two bodies recovered.

Palghar (Virar): Three devotees were saved from drowning with the help of a Ro-Ro boat.

Washim & Amravati: Three separate drowning deaths reported.

Mumbai (Sakinaka): One man died of electrocution after an idol came in contact with a hanging power cable; five others injured.
Scale of Immersions

In Mumbai alone, over 1.97 lakh Ganesh idols were immersed in natural and artificial ponds during the 11-day festival.

The iconic Lalbaugcha Raja immersion took more than 32 hours, finally concluding around 9:15 PM on Sunday at Girgaon Chowpatty.

In Pune, the immersion processions went on for nearly 32 hours, with over 7.45 lakh household idols and 3,959 big idols immersed.

State disaster management teams and NDRF personnel have been deployed due to heavy rains and rising water levels in rivers.

The BMC collected 508 tonnes of floral offerings (nirmalya) from natural water bodies and 290+ artificial ponds, launching a major post-festival cleanup drive.
Ganpati Visarjan, usually marked by joy, chants, and cultural celebrations, has left many families grieving this year. Authorities have urged devotees to take extra precautions during future immersions, especially in rivers and unsafe spots.
